What you will be doing.

Artificial intelligence is not a feature at NexTrium; it is infrastructure. We are building systems that need to understand patterns, make decisions, and improve over time in contexts where data is sparse, connectivity is inconsistent, and the cost of getting it wrong falls on people who can least afford it. As an AI/ML Engineer on the founding team, you will design and build the intelligence layer across our products and research initiatives. Your work will span model design, training pipelines, inference optimization, and integration with our product backends. You will work on problems that are genuinely unsolved in the African context, from trust scoring in informal economies to decentralized AI on edge devices. You will have access to real-world datasets, real users, and a team that takes the technical work seriously. This role suits someone who is rigorous about methodology, honest about model limitations, and excited by the challenge of building AI systems that work in constrained environments rather than ideal ones.

What we are looking for
Strong proficiency in Python with hands-on experience in machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn
Experience designing, training, and evaluating machine learning models for real-world applications
Understanding of data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model validation techniques
Familiarity with edge AI or TinyML concepts is a strong advantage
Experience with federated learning, privacy-preserving AI, or decentralised model architectures is highly desirable
Ability to communicate model behaviour and limitations clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Comfort working with limited or noisy datasets common in African market contexts
Strong written communication for async remote collaboration
Genuine curiosity about the intersection of AI, decentralised systems, and economic inclusion
